At the beginning of the year our goal was to work on a project to present at the GIN Conference 2014 in Dominican Republic, however, we didn´t work as efficiently as we could have. An important lesson we´ve learned is that we need to be consistent, enthusiastic and organized.
Inside our club we are divided into groups and each one is in charge of different projects. Within them we have one that collects plastic bottles to use them as bricks to build homes. Another one is the reforastation initiative which involves the plantation of trees and reestoring the natural ecosystem. Finally the project which I´m most involved in is the stoves. Many of you might be asking yourselves, why stoves? Well, actually in these rural communities many families cook inside their houses, so all the smoke and toxic gases that are released remain within the shelter. This brings negative consequences since little kids end up with risky respiratory problems. With the stoves we provide, not only are they efficient in reducing the amount of wood needed to produce heat but also it has a tube that guides the toxic air out of the house creating a healthier environment for the family.
As you can see below, the 15 of February of 2014, we went to Sumpango with a group from New Jersey to build the stoves. Helps, the organization that sponsored the build was the one that provided the materials. It was an AMAZING experience.
It was my first time going to a community in Guatemala and installing a stove. Everything is very easy since the structure of the stove is made out of blocks, cement pieces, bricks, and metal pieces but everything is made perfectly to fit like a puzzle. Nevertheless, I can say that the hardest part is to attach two metal pieces to the metal tube and to the roof so it maintains itself secure and unable to fall.
